If you are certain that ammonia is the problem you could try doing a side-by-side test with Microtox. Aerate one sample for approximately 20 minutes to drive off the ammonia and test a duplicate sample that has not been aerated. If you get similar results in each sample then it is likely not ammonia. This is assuming, of course, that you are allowed to manipulate the sample by aeration or other methods.
